Technical surveillance
counter measures
Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM or Debugging) is the detection of surveillance devices through a physical and electronic sweep.
The value of TSCM
Debugging sweeps are undertaken to give reassurance that you are not being watched.
- In a domestic situation to check whether a partner is ‘spying’ on the other partner.
- For business to ensure that highly confidential information is not being stolen.
The technology
Technical Surveillance Counter Measures is full of lots of jargon and strange sounding names. Here are a few you may read or hear:
- Active and passive bugs. UHF and VHF devices.
- Non Linear Junction Detectors. Spread spectrum.
- Burst transmission. Frequency hopping transmitters.
- Infra-red illumination.
- Tracking devices. Recorders and real-time.
- Telephone line bugs.
- Battery powered, device powered, hard-wired mains powered.
- Key stroke loggers.
- ... and the list goes on.
