Technical surveillance
counter measures

Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM or Debugging) is the detection of surveillance devices through a physical and electronic sweep.

The value of TSCM

Debugging sweeps are undertaken to give reassurance that you are not being watched.

  • In a domestic situation to check whether a partner is ‘spying’ on the other partner.
  • For business to ensure that highly confidential information is not being stolen.

The technology

Technical Surveillance Counter Measures is full of lots of jargon and strange sounding names. Here are a few you may read or hear:

  • Active and passive bugs. UHF and VHF devices.
  • Non Linear Junction Detectors. Spread spectrum.
  • Burst transmission. Frequency hopping transmitters.
  • Infra-red illumination.
  • Tracking devices. Recorders and real-time.
  • Telephone line bugs.
  • Battery powered, device powered, hard-wired mains powered.
  • Key stroke loggers.
  • ... and the list goes on.
